Installation View (Gaffa, 2016)

These photographs attempt to balance the continuous, astronomical light of the night’s sky with the passing, ephemeral light of low flying aircraft. In order to achieve this, each photograph represents a continuous exposure of at least 8 minutes. The title of each work reflects these exposure times by indicating the proportion of the earth’s rotation (a full rotation being 360 arc degrees) and the flight numbers of the aircraft that have passed during the exposure.
The photographs with their titles contain enough information to allow them to be used as a map of, and link to the specific time and exact location they were taken from. They are intended as a meditation on how the immediacy of a moment experienced relates to time as an idea.
The photographs were taken in Kurnell with a large format camera attached to an astronomical mount over a three month period from June, 2015.
